Well small update. Replacement pump turned up, everything fine. Except the laser still isnt cutting, its barely scratching the acrylic. Some more emails and phone calls later and its clear the tube is dead. Probably "cooked" as Chris put it. So got the wallet out and paid for a new tube an...

Well got home after being out with friends to find an email from Chris saying he'll pop a warranty replacement in the post. Top guy, no nonsense, gets straight to it. So happy ending (errr not like that) for me.

Well it was the water pump..... stupidly its going to cost almost the same to send the pump back for a replacement as it will to just order a new one.....
Anyone replace their pump and can recommend something as good maybe better?

OK, 2nd attempt succeeded. Now i understand by what you mean by black knob, there is indeed one in my little supply bag, and i knew immediately where it went. Laser works a damn sight faster now its focused. Thanks Tom.
